About

The department began its journey in 1961 when Physiology was introduced as a general course subject. From the very beginning the faculties of the department have been involved in active research and till date 14 students have been conferred Ph.D. degrees by the universities of Calcutta and Jadavpur.
Over the years the Department has developed a modest infrastructure for research in the fields of animal cell culture, microbiology, nutrition and public health and sports physiology through the endeavours of highly motivated, research oriented faculties.
The vision of the department is to produce of young graduates who are not only sound in concepts, holistic in their approach towards problems, courageous to raise and address relevant questions in logical and scientific ways but are also technically skilled to do so.
We sincerely believe that the various extracurricular activities proposed would spark interests of students and stimulate them to take up careers in science. The outreach programmes would play a significant role in imbibing social responsibilities among students.

Best Practices

  • A departmental seminar library is used by the students of both Honours and General students.
  • Internet enabled computers are present for the use of students.
  • ICT based facility is available in the department.
  • A bridge course of about five to six hours duration is offered to new comers of first semester where they get to interact with the teachers of the course in person. The bridge course is designed to narrow the gap between high school and university studies. It is aimed at providing an even foundation to students coming from a varied background in terms the basic knowledge and skills. The course structure, outcome and approach required for the successful completion of the B.Sc. Course in Physiology is also explained during bridge course.

Teaching Learning

  • The department has two lecture theatres and three laboratories.
  • Department have one of each Animal Experimental, Biochemistry, Histology and Human Experimental laboratories containing the following instruments:
Animal Experimental – Dales apparatus, Perfusion apparatus, induction coil, Myograph board, Kymograph.
Biochemistry and Microbiology – Spectrophotometer, Photoelectric colorimeter, electronic weighing balances, water bath, Tabletop Centrifuge, micro centrifuge, Homogenizer, ELISA plate reader, Magnetic stirrer, Electrophoresis apparatus, Chromatography chamber, Laminar air flow.
Histology- Compound light microscopes, binocular microscope.
Human Experimental- Pneumograph, Sphygmomanometers, Anthropometric rod, Peak flow meter.

Syllabus

  • CBCS Syllabus was framed and introduced in the academic year of 2018-19. It can be availed by the following link click here
  • CCF Syllabus was framed and introduced in the academic year of 2023-24. It can be availed by the following link click here

Capacity Building

  • The department arranges regular student seminars, invited lectures by distinguished teachers and scientists in an attempt to train them in scientific deliberations.
  • Wall magazine is published yearly.
  • The students also take part in regular field trips and visits to institutes of bio medical importance to gain a greater perspective of the subject.
  • The students are encouraged to participate in scientific activities relevant to their subject in campuses outside the college as well.
  • The final year students undertake small project works where they get hands on experience on research methodology in the field of biological sciences.
  • Certificate courses are also offered to the students to gain knowledge out of the syllabus.

Academic Activities

Certificate Courses

  • A certificate course on ESSENTIAL LABORATORY SKILLS FOR UNDERGRADUATE PHYSIOLOGY STUDENTS was started on 1st April 2022 with both theory and practical classes.
  • The duration of the course was 30 hrs. After completion of the courses, the students will acquire an in-depth understanding of some basic laboratory procedures and techniques used in modern biomedical laboratories which will allow the rapid acquisition of more specialist skills later in their careers.
  • The certificate course was also in succession this year. Fifteen students enrolled and successfully completed the course. The syllabus was the same and student feedback was good about the programme.
