The Department of Commerce was established with the introduction of the Pass course in 1957. The Honours course in the Department was introduced in 1970. The Department presents a perfect example of teaching and learning within the parameters of the University of Calcutta regulations. As a result, it is surging ahead under the able leadership of its faculty members. Continuous evaluation and dedication have taken the department to its glory. The quality of the students is also very good and as a result, successful students find it easier to go to M. Com, Chartered/Cost Accountancy /Company Secretary Course, MBA and other professional courses.
The department has its own library which is quite rich in collection of books and journals. Lending facility of books from departmental library is also there for the benefit of the students of the department and it is done in consultation with central library of this college.
Professors remain available beyond their scheduled class hours and during recess for academic interactions with the students such as Honours Project Supervision, Computerised Accounting and E-Filing (CAEF) practice sessions, project work with the final semester students, Information Technology (IT Practical) practice sessions with 3rd semester (honours and general) students of the department etc.
The Department has a separate computer laboratory as the syllabus is ICT based and there are ten computers and internet facilities with LAN Connection. The faculty uses Audio-Visual aids for teaching with Blackboard, Flow Charts, LCD Projector, Laptop, ICT as teaching aids.
Professors regularly participate in Remedial coaching classes and special classes for students of the department. In addition, students with difficulties are encouraged to have personal discussions outside their classrooms with the concerned professors during their suitable time.
Every year, since 2019-20, the department organises bridge course classes for 1st semester students to overcome the knowledge gap of the students regarding the basics of the accounting, finance and management. It is a total 6 hours programme containing 6 classes of 1 hour each. This course contains a broad syllabus relating to the basics of Accounting and Finance (1 hour), Management (1 hour), Laws & Taxes (1 hour), Business & Economic Development (1 Hour), Development of Business and E-Commerce (1 Hour). This course also provides an in-depth knowledge about the Course Structure in CBCS under University of Calcutta for Honours & General Course and the Course Content of B. Com Honours & General Course (1 Hour).
